Meet the Library Intern: Taylor Dearborn

My name is Taylor Dearborn, and I am a senior here at Mount Mercy University. I am majoring in English and minoring in creative writing, diversity studies, and psychology. I have been in competitive cheer here for all four years. I am a representative for cheer in Council for Student Athletes (CSA) and have been for three years. I am also a Student Ambassador for the second year in a row.

There are a lot of unique and interesting facts about Mount Mercy University, but the most interesting to me would be that Warde was once the whole campus. Mount Mercy is known for the catholic religion, the tunnels, the convent, but that fact is not as well known. It is so cool to see the pictures of the sisters walking around campus back then. I think another cool fact is that the Grotto on campus is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a beautiful place to do homework and feel connected to nature while still being in the middle of the city.

Mount Mercy has been one of my best decisions. Mount Mercy has given me so many amazing friends and opportunities. I was able to continue cheer, which I truly thought I would have to give up after high school. I also got to travel to Paris, France for J-term in 2019 and plan to travel again this upcoming J-term.  My trip to Paris was a truly unforgettable trip that I will always remember, and I still think about it almost every day. Since Mount Mercy offers a J-term the trips are shorter and cheaper than a full semester study abroad.

Outside of school I am a shift lead at Caribou Coffee and have been for a little over a year. I am obsessed with coffee, which is fitting for my job. Other than that, I do not have a lot of outside activities going on. I love spending time with friends and family, and I am very close to my family. I have two cats at home. Jazmine is a yellow tabby who is 17 years old and loves to drool like a dog. CeCe is the baby who is one year old, and she is mixed with Siamese. I am a cat person and cannot wait to get cats of my own in the future.

Besides this internship I have not worked behind the scenes of a library, but I have always loved spending time in libraries. From a very young age in elementary school, I would be in extra reading groups and spend all my free time the library. So far in this internship I have been working on an on an online proxy data base, which means making sure students and faculty members emails and student ID numbers are plugged into an excel sheet correctly. I have also been inventorying the books and working on the blog post. It is very driven by what I would prefer to do. It is an amazing opportunity to widen my love for books in new ways and learn more about the behind the scenes of a library.
